With Jakob Dylan as its steady centerpiece, The Wallflowers have always carried an unshakable faith in the immediacy of rock ’n’ roll. In the simple approach, the direct melody, that moment when a song feels true before you’ve even had time to think about it. When the band released their self-titled debut album in 1992, a wave of grunge bands from Seattle was defining an entire era, but The Wallflowers chose a different path. They looked backward rather than forward, toward the legacy of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. Toward Hammond organs and lyrics where storytelling stood at the forefront. Although the debut was met with a lukewarm response, Jakob Dylan continued to write and guide the band forward – and that would prove decisive. With the follow-up Bringing Down the Horse (1996) and the massive hit “One Headlight,” the doors were thrown wide open. The album sold millions of copies, won two Grammy Awards, and placed The Wallflowers at the center of a musical landscape they had never actually tried to conquer. Since then, they have continued along their own path, seemingly as unconcerned with trends as with the fact that Jakob happens to be the son of one of the most legendary artists in music history.
