It was hard to know whether The Last Dinner Party could live up to the colossal hype surrounding the Brixton band in 2023. Despite having only released one single—the majestic Nothing Matters—they quickly built up a fanatical following among both listeners and influential critics. But any fears that we were dealing with an “emperor’s new clothes” situation were swept away when the band released their outstanding debut album Prelude to Ecstasy in 2024. A record where the band’s updated version of 80s baroque pop proved to be just as good, as polished, and as dramatic as anyone could have hoped.

Now it’s time for The Last Dinner Party to release their follow-up album, From the Pyre, arriving on October 17. The first taste from the album is the ominous This is the Killer Speaking, where the band builds further on their signature baroque pop but lets it collide with the decadence of glam rock and the storytelling tradition of country music in a western-inspired tale about being “ghosted.” Why The Last Dinner Party is one of the most talked-about bands of our time is easy to understand—just see them live at Fållan on March 4.
