Redman is that guy who charges rap with humor without losing sight of the streets. A pioneer mixing smooth P-Funk (Parliament-Funkadelic influence) with rock-hard East Coast grit. He made his debut in 1992 on Def Jam with “Whut? Thee Album.” Produced by Erick Sermon (EPMD), an almost manic style is formed, ranging from relaxed to hyperactive and back again. The foundation laid. The record sold over 500,000 copies at the time, the hip-hop journal The Source crowned the self- proclaimed Funk Doctor Rap Artist of the Year 1993. In 1995, he “collided” with Method Man, and what began initially as freestyle battles on “Yo! MTV Raps”, as kind of a dry run, eventually became the feature single “How High.” Other hits such as “Da Rockwilder,” from the original soundtrack to the movie “Save the Last Dance,” have been created. Redman rapped with Method Man on Biggie's posthumous “Born Again” and commuted to Tupac's studio for “Got My Mind Made Up.” Timeless solo joints like “Whateva Man,” “I'll Bee Dat,” and “Smash Sumthin” achieve heavy rotation on relevant music channels. Redman ultimately succeeds in crossing over into the mainstream with “Dirrty” featuring Christina Aguilera.
Redman tracks are highly energetic bar bombardments – downright word orgies. Or as he himself would say: “My slang be high range Brick City {...}” with “{...} Gorilla impact in this rap habitat.” In December 2024, after his sequel album release of “Muddy Waters Too,” Eminem posted that Redman was “one of my all-time favorite rappers.”
